Rocky Mountain Resilience The TL16-44-34 is essential to the Colorado Interstate
Gas Co. of Pueblo, Colo. A custom-built grapple attachment aids safety
and stability of pipe handling. Recently, the Colorado Interstate Gas Co., Pueblo, Colo., needed a telescopic handler that could perform various tasks and withstand the rough ground and environment. A ToveLazer TL16-44-34 telescopic handler became the newest machine in the facility's yard. The company currently uses the TL16-44-34 to transport 40-foot long bundles of pipe between stages of preparation. After the pipes are machined, they are taken from the Pueblo site and used in gas pipelines. Each pipe weighs approximately 1,600 pounds. The pipes must be transported with care, as the slightest damage could result in serious consequences if broken pipes are installed. Often mud as deep as four feet covers the yard; however, the unit is able to cut through it and finish the work. "We have almost 2,000 hours on the machine," says J. Jones, technical specialist for the Pueblo facility. "I am very pleased with the design and dependability." Standard equipment includes automatic carriage-load leveling, hydraulic disc brakes, frame leveling, and joystick boom controls. A Perkins 1006-6T 366-cubic inch, 165-hp diesel engine provides plenty of power. Two-wheel, four wheel, and crab steering complete the unit. The forks have a maximum height of 34 feet, at which height they can handle loads up to 8,000 pounds. At a little over 20 feet high, the forks can carry the maximum of 16,000 pounds. The boom can extend horizontally to a 20-foot load center, and it has a negative vertical reach of one foot. Tovel also offers telescopic handlers for the 6,000- 8,000-, and 30,000-pound markets. Most comforts features are optional on the TL16-44-34, such as air conditioning, heater defroster, enclosed cab, and windshield wipers. Tovel will custom build needed fork/carriage attachments and perform all necessary modifications at the customer's request. For the Pueblo gas facility, custom-made hydraulic grapples accompany the forks for pipe handling.” As appeared in Lift Equipment Magazine written by Tudor Hampton.
